The energetic former from man to kids super group the Wiggles, talks for the first time about his debilitating illness that forced him out of the daily touring, recording, promotion schedule that was part of the Wiggles life. Greg has made some progress in dealing with his chronic condition, and still yearns to be back touring again, however he has begun to chart his new future….The Sydney Morning Herald reports…
Two years ago tomorrow, Greg Page was forced to quit life in a skivvie, walking away from being adored by delighted tots around the world as part of one of the country’s biggest entertainment success stories.
At 34, the former trainee teacher had been a member of the Wiggles, which earned an estimated $45 million last financial year, for 16 years. But after collapsing twice on tour, Page was diagnosed with orthostatic intolerance – a condition that leaves him disoriented and occasionally slurring his words when he stands upright for even a few minutes.
It took three frustrating months to find out what was making him ill. At the time, he was using a walking stick and was worried that observers would think he was drunk.
“I must have gone to pick something up and I knocked something else over,” he says of an especially bad day. “I totally missed what it was that I was going to pick up. I think I was still undiagnosed at the time, so that was a pretty low point.
“To be feeling the way you feel – tired, lethargic, heavy-chested, light-headed and just vague, and to be missing your mouth when you go to eat things – that was a pretty raw moment.”
With the decision to leave the group, which had reporters camped outside his Sydney home, Page went from what he calls the Wiggle World, the high-profile life of concerts, CDs, DVDs and celebrity fans on the touring circuit, to the Non-Wiggle World, where he has to manage a chronic medical condition.
