When tickets to AC/DC’s November concert at GM Place went on sale Friday morning, Annette Romano and thousands of others were poised at their computers, ready to click for tickets.

The $99 tickets went on sale at precisely 10 a.m. on Ticketmaster’s website, but within minutes, Romano was receiving a message indicating she was out of luck.

“I thought my computer was malfunctioning. I couldn’t even get one seat in the nosebleeds,” Romano said Monday in an interview.

The Vancouver show sold out in four minutes, according to promoter Live Nation. The news was announced Friday in a mass e-mail sent out just 25 minutes after the tickets went on sale.

But while the quick sellout is good news for the promoter and for Ticketmaster, it has caused mass frustration among those who were unable to get tickets.

Chief among those frustrations is the fact that while all the $99 tickets were snatched up in minutes, resale tickets were available equally as fast on the ticket exchange portion of the Ticketmaster website for nearly $500. And on Monday, tickets were going for as much as $1,318 each.

At TicketsNow, a ticket-reselling website that is also owned by Ticketmaster, tickets were available Monday for between $400 and $1,070.

For the average music fan who just wants to rock out to Thunderstruck, that’s too much.

“I’ll just pop in a DVD,” said a defeated Romano.

The increasing presence of online scalpers and ticket resale brokers is making it more and more difficult for average fans to elbow their way into the fray. Between fan club pre-sales, radio promotions, and resale brokers, Romano believes fewer tickets are being released for direct sale.

No one from Ticketmaster was available Monday for comment and Live Nation is not willing to comment on the matter.

But Murray Pratt, vice-president of business development and operations for ShowTimeTickets.com, said it is an issue of supply and demand.

“The AC/DC tour is probably one of the most sought-after tickets in North America,” Pratt said Monday in an interview.

ShowTimeTickets.com is an online ticket broker that acquires tickets from those who want to sell them and resells them to eager fans.

“Our particular expertise is, being in the business for 20 years, we have relationships out there with people who are season-ticket holders. We have relationships with people who want to sell tickets to us.”

Pratt could not say definitively whether Canucks season-ticket holders were able to get pre-sale tickets for AC/DC, but he said they often get early offers for concerts.

According to ShowTimeTickets.com, ticket reselling is a $5-billion industry that is forecast to grow at a rate of 12 per cent per year over the next five years.

Ticketmaster paid $265 million for TicketsNow when it bought the company earlier this year. And eBay bought StubHub, another leader in the ticket resale market, for $310 million.

But it is the deal between Ticketmaster and TicketsNow that is particularly troubling for those who feel they have been shut out of the year’s hottest concerts or sporting events.

Tyler Anderson, an AC/DC fan who could not get a ticket first-hand from Ticketmaster, wrote The Vancouver Sun with the following comment:

“It’s time for the government to step in and either outlaw scalping altogether or at least put some rules in place so they can only charge so much more for tickets.”

Pratt said British Columbia does not have any anti-scalping legislation and noted that many jurisdictions with legislation are abandoning it in favour of allowing ticket resales.

Saskatchewan’s provincial government, however, expressed concern in July about the scalping issue when people were enraged by the huge markup in ticket prices at TicketsNow for an Elton John concert in Saskatoon.

On its website, Ticketmaster says it does not hold back tickets for resale on TicketsNow.

But TicketsNow does generate revenue from its ticket sales, tickets which it says are supplied by more than 800 professional ticket resellers who are regularly monitored to ensure their reliability.

Ticketmaster says on its website that it can sell more than 14,000 tickets per minute. Concert capacity at GM Place is about 15,000.

This will be Tina Turner’s first tour since the record breaking and triumphant tour of 2000. It was in that year, following the success of her platinum-selling album Twenty Four Seven, she cemented herself as a stadium rock superstar. She is rightly regarded as the first genuine female stadium rock superstar, selling out 120 stadiums across the US and Europe, and grossing $80 million in the US alone. It was the biggest tour of that year and the biggest ever undertaken by a female artist, performing to more than 2 million people.

In 2008, with 24 shows scheduled, what can the fans expect? Tina is known for her high-energy action packed performances and a song list that extends back to the mid sixties. “River Deep, Mountain High”, “Proud Mary”, “What’s Love Got to do With it” and “Nutbush City Limits” are some of the favourites that the crowd can expect. But the greatest treat will be seeing the first diva of rock & roll in full flight, after an

extended absence. After this will we have to wait another eight years? This might be the last chance ever to see the great Tina in concert.

Created by 28 year old Lin-Manuel Miranda while he was in college, the show features Miranda taking center stage, bounding around exuberantly and forcefully delivering the rap-dialogue in a style many musical goers may be unaccustomed. And when taking the stage to accept his award he continued the style telling the audience “I used to dream about this moment, now I’m in it,” “Tell the conductor to hold the baton a minute.” And with a nod to Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, Miranda raps: “Look, Mr. Sondheim, I made a hat where there never was a hat and it’s a Latin hat at that.”

He has created a window into modern Latino culture, perhaps with some gloss on it, but a window nonetheless. A relative newcomer to the theater, Miranda wrote the score and all of the songs, as well as playing the lead role. He simply lights up the stage with a dazzling display and draws the viewer in. “In the Heights” played off-Broadway for a season. The orchestration of the show is bright and vibrant and very modern. “In the Heights” also won awards for the score, orchestrations and choreography.

No standout show took all the awards this year, the prizes were shared around. Winners in the recent past such as Jersey Boys and Wicked are still playing to packed houses around Broadway. The revival musical “South Pacific” picked up seven wins including best revival and best actor — for the lead, Paulo Szot — in addition to four design awards and an award for best director, Bartlett Sher.

This years Tony Awards was hosted by comedian and talk show host Whoopi Goldberg. Around 790 people from the theater industry — from actors, to directors to journalists — vote for the Tony Awards. The Tony Awards were established in 1947 and are named after Atoinette Perry, whose nickname was Toni. Perry, who died in 1946, was an actress, stage director and philanthropist.

There has always been a great deal of interest in the genesis of one of the most enduring pop songs of a generation. The Guardian reports that this mystery has recently been solved. To music lovers across the world, it is one of the emblematic songs of the 60s, a lively, catchy love song to a girl known simply as Sweet Caroline. Now, 40 years after its release, the singer and songwriter Neil Diamond has revealed the inspiration behind the song: the Caroline in question was Caroline Kennedy, now the only surviving child of President John F Kennedy.

Diamond, 66, revealed how he had never revealed the origins of the song with anyone, preferring to keep it a secret until the day he actually met Caroline face to face. Diamond let the cat out of the bag, telling both the press and the song’s subject about its origin, when he finally met the now Caroline Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg, and performed the song for her 50th birthday. He stated that the song was extremely important to him and one of his first really big hits, going onto to be a massive seller. “I have to thank her for the inspiration,” he said. The song really made his mark and left the public in no two minds that Neil was a great songwriter and performer.

He told Associated Press that he was happy to have gotten it off his chest and to have expressed it to Caroline. “I thought she might be embarrassed, but she seemed to be struck by it and really, really happy.” The motivation for the song came from a photograph of the then nine-year-old Kennedy the singer saw in a magazine while staying at a hotel in Memphis. “It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony,” Diamond said. “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture; I immediately felt there was a song in there.”

Later on, Diamond penned the song inspired by the photograph. It became a hit, reviving his flagging career and eventually selling more than 2 million copies and providing countless karaoke singers with a chance to shine.

Ever popular the song recently reappeared in the singles chart in the US, thanks in part to the fact that it is belted out during home games at Fenway Park, home to the Boston Red Sox baseball team. “I think they consider it good luck,” Diamond told the Associated Press, adding that the Red Sox have become his favourite baseball team.
