Demand is high for tickets to the group’s impending tour, as evidenced by the 18 sellouts the band logged when tickets went on sale earlier this month, prompting the group to add encore performances in a number of cities.

AC/DC’s upcoming tour supports the forthcoming album “Black Ice,” which is due in stores Oct. 20. As has become more commonplace in recent years, AC/DC has joined the ranks of artists who cut deals with exclusive retail distributors; “Black Ice” will be sold in the US exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club, as well as via the band’s website.

Fans who order tickets to the tour via Ticketmaster.com will have an exclusive opportunity to pre-order “Black Ice,” according to a press release. (Ticketmaster is LiveDaily’s parent company.)

Produced by Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam) and mixed by the band’s longtime audio engineer, Mike Fraser, “Black Ice” features the leadoff single “Rock ‘N’ Roll Train,” which hit radio stations late last month and went to No. 1 at rock radio, according to Sony BMG. AC/DC‘s first world tour in eight years got an enthusiastic response from ticket buyers with 18 concerts selling out in record time, forcing the band to create additional shows in Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA, and Oakland, CA. Their 18-month Black Ice World Tour kicks off on October 8 in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The October 30 Allstate Arena concert in Chicago, IL, sold out in minutes forcing a second show on November 1 to go on sale, which also sold out last weekend. Both Madison Square Garden concerts on November 12-13 in New York City sold out in minutes.

In Canada, the November 28 General Motors Place concert in Vancouver, BC, sold out in four minutes, a record for the venue. Additionally, reports state that tickets for the November 7 show in Toronto, ON, at the Rogers Centre sold faster than any stadium concert in the venue’s history.

“The tremendous fan response to AC/DC is evidenced by record breaking ticket sales this weekend,” said Columbia Records co-Chairman Steve Barnett in a statement. “Along with the worldwide success of the ‘No Bull’ DVD re-release, it’s obvious that fans are anxiously awaiting the October 20 release of the new album, ‘Black Ice.’”

However, some Vancouver fans attempting to buy AC/DC tickets ended up empty-handed and disgruntled. According to the Vancouver Sun, while all the $99 tickets for the show went clean in minutes, resale tickets popped up on Ticketmaster‘s ticket exchange site, TicketsNow.

In past published reports, Ticketmaster stated that tickets are obtained from licensed brokers and individual sellers; they are not held back for resale on it resale site. As of the afternoon of September 24, prices for AC/DC’s Vancouver concert on TicketsNow range from $438 to $1,123.

AC/DC is using Ticketmaster’s paperless ticket technology exclusively for seats reserved by the band’s fan club members. In a recent report, Ticketmaster declared the paperless ticket’s European debut a success when the system was used for a September 15 Metallica concert.

When tickets to AC/DC’s November concert at GM Place went on sale Friday morning, Annette Romano and thousands of others were poised at their computers, ready to click for tickets.

The $99 tickets went on sale at precisely 10 a.m. on Ticketmaster’s website, but within minutes, Romano was receiving a message indicating she was out of luck.

“I thought my computer was malfunctioning. I couldn’t even get one seat in the nosebleeds,” Romano said Monday in an interview.

The Vancouver show sold out in four minutes, according to promoter Live Nation. The news was announced Friday in a mass e-mail sent out just 25 minutes after the tickets went on sale.

But while the quick sellout is good news for the promoter and for Ticketmaster, it has caused mass frustration among those who were unable to get tickets.

Chief among those frustrations is the fact that while all the $99 tickets were snatched up in minutes, resale tickets were available equally as fast on the ticket exchange portion of the Ticketmaster website for nearly $500. And on Monday, tickets were going for as much as $1,318 each.

At TicketsNow, a ticket-reselling website that is also owned by Ticketmaster, tickets were available Monday for between $400 and $1,070.

For the average music fan who just wants to rock out to Thunderstruck, that’s too much.

“I’ll just pop in a DVD,” said a defeated Romano.

The increasing presence of online scalpers and ticket resale brokers is making it more and more difficult for average fans to elbow their way into the fray. Between fan club pre-sales, radio promotions, and resale brokers, Romano believes fewer tickets are being released for direct sale.

No one from Ticketmaster was available Monday for comment and Live Nation is not willing to comment on the matter.

But Murray Pratt, vice-president of business development and operations for ShowTimeTickets.com, said it is an issue of supply and demand.

“The AC/DC tour is probably one of the most sought-after tickets in North America,” Pratt said Monday in an interview.

ShowTimeTickets.com is an online ticket broker that acquires tickets from those who want to sell them and resells them to eager fans.

“Our particular expertise is, being in the business for 20 years, we have relationships out there with people who are season-ticket holders. We have relationships with people who want to sell tickets to us.”

Pratt could not say definitively whether Canucks season-ticket holders were able to get pre-sale tickets for AC/DC, but he said they often get early offers for concerts.

According to ShowTimeTickets.com, ticket reselling is a $5-billion industry that is forecast to grow at a rate of 12 per cent per year over the next five years.

Ticketmaster paid $265 million for TicketsNow when it bought the company earlier this year. And eBay bought StubHub, another leader in the ticket resale market, for $310 million.

But it is the deal between Ticketmaster and TicketsNow that is particularly troubling for those who feel they have been shut out of the year’s hottest concerts or sporting events.

Tyler Anderson, an AC/DC fan who could not get a ticket first-hand from Ticketmaster, wrote The Vancouver Sun with the following comment:

“It’s time for the government to step in and either outlaw scalping altogether or at least put some rules in place so they can only charge so much more for tickets.”

Pratt said British Columbia does not have any anti-scalping legislation and noted that many jurisdictions with legislation are abandoning it in favour of allowing ticket resales.

Saskatchewan’s provincial government, however, expressed concern in July about the scalping issue when people were enraged by the huge markup in ticket prices at TicketsNow for an Elton John concert in Saskatoon.

On its website, Ticketmaster says it does not hold back tickets for resale on TicketsNow.

But TicketsNow does generate revenue from its ticket sales, tickets which it says are supplied by more than 800 professional ticket resellers who are regularly monitored to ensure their reliability.

Ticketmaster says on its website that it can sell more than 14,000 tickets per minute. Concert capacity at GM Place is about 15,000.

Malcolm Young is a familiar face to the shopkeepers of East Balmain, especially at Christmas time. Locals describe him as a down-to-earth sort of a bloke with more than just a passing interest in rock’n'roll.

Yet not many of Young’s neighbours could boast a fortune estimated at $125 million, nor could they claim to be a co-founder of one of the most successful rock bands: AC/DC. But Young would rather not talk about his private life. He and his bandmates including his brother Angus like to fly below the fame radar. Unlike Australia’s other great cultural exports, the Youngs live out of the spotlight, slipping in and out of Sydney with little fanfare – although their Sydney homes are a giveaway.

When in Sydney, Malcolm and his wife, O’Linda, with their son and daughter, live in a handsome sandstone mansion named Oncaparinga, which sits elegantly behind an impressive stone wall and overlooks its tennis court and swimming pool. The property is one of the largest in Balmain, taking up most of the block it sits on. Estate agents estimate it would be worth up to $15 million.

Angus Young, who has no children and his own $125 million fortune, has an impressive home at Kangaroo Point, although it pales next to his much larger pile in the Dutch town of Aalten, which was completed last year and has been the talk of the town because of its enormous scale. Aalten is the home town of Young’s wife of 26 years, Ellen.

Last week BRW magazine listed AC/DC as Australia’s eighth highest earning entertainers, raking in $12 million to June 30. In the 12 years BRW has been doing the list, AC/DC has earned $198.5 million and that does not include the millions made in the 23 years before BRW began monitoring its fortunes.

AC/DC has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including 69 million in the United States. The album Back In Black, released in 1980, has sold 42 million copies alone. Next month AC/DC releases its first album since 2000. It is expected to sell in the millions, driven by a mammoth 18-month world tour.

Since its inception AC/DC has been with the Sydney label Alberts Music. As AC/DC’s fortunes grew, so did that of the Albert family, which owns the label. BRW last listed the Albert family fortune at more than $200 million, much of it from royalties from the AC/DC catalogue.

A talent-spotter for Alberts, Sam Horsburgh, said: “You won’t see Angus or Malcolm written about in gossip magazines … it’s just not their style. They are very regular people and lead very normal lives off stage.”

Horsburgh also happens to be Angus and Malcolm Young’s nephew.
