Metallica ‘s “Death Magnetic” sold 490,000 copies during its first three days in stores, enough to easily top the latest US album chart–even though the competition had a seven-day sales window. “Death Magnetic” was issued on Friday instead of the traditional Tuesday release date for US albums.
According to Billboard, Metallica is the first band to have five albums debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. The magazine bases its flagship album chart on Nielsen SoundScan retail sales data.
